The Raw Shark Texts is one of my favorite books. It's very hard to describe and I don't want to ruin anything, but if you're into twists and thinking conceptually, this book is for you. Also a brilliantly designed book, the way they laid out the special text makes you feel the way the intend (trying not to spoil). Read this now!!
Steven Hall delivers an amazing novel. It's a truly original story and entertaining story, delving into loss, grief, desperation, love, relationships, and to what lengths a man will go to try and save a lost love. The story also pursues themes of redemption and salvation.
A heartwrenching story is superbly written with analogies anyone can relate to, but the book must be read several times to understand all the intricacies of the novel.

Steven hall writes eloquently and with the seeming experience of someone who has experience the gamut of all the emotions included in the story, and is able to translate that experience to something everyone can understand with excellent skill.

This book is best read by readers who understand symbolism, classic romance, and also that not everything in the book must be explicitly stated or understood to appreciate the story.

After reading the book for the 4th time, the world that Hall creates makes perfect sense, as does everything that goes on beneath the surface of the story, such as why the ending of the book resembles a certain movie.
This novel was the latest selection for our book club. We have yet to have our meeting, but I will give the text one thing, the discussion should be interesting. I believe the discussion will be interesting for what we read into the text, but not by what is actually there. I am sure that the people who praise this text will say rather pretentiously that that was the author's intent, but I would seriously doubt that to be true. There is the occasional novel phrase or sentence structure that sounds an idea in a unique manner, but not nearly enough to sustain any serious reader's interest. The climatic scene of the text is gripping, I'll give credit where it is due, but does that justify the previous 400 pages? The novel is too inconsistent in its themes and characterizations to justify the interesting bits and pieces that crop up sporadically. To me a successful text does not leave its reader impartial once the text is finished. The idea of a memory eating shark is intriguing. Unfortunately, by the middle of this novel I was praying for the "conceptual shark" to eat up my memory too. I gave this text 2 stars for its creative attempts, but the ending is disappointing and flat. If you must read, read it with someone else, if for no better reason then to have someone to say "what the hell?" with once you both have completed!
Jaws meets post-modernism. A book that you'll want to read in one sitting and be glad you did. Yet, despite its thriller pace and horror tropes the novel is full of really heady themes and ideas. You'll be contemplating how something so esoteric is so compelling. The experimental elements work so well and add an extra dimension to the text. A novel that can't be put down that will stay with you.
It took me a few chapters to really immerse myself in this novel, but once I gave up overthinking whether this was reality or fantasy or reality that turns into fantasy and just allowed myself to be swept along, I enjoyed it. This is one of those books that can be interpreted in a number of ways and I can imagine arguments developing, even as I type my brain is arguing with itself as to which interpretation fits best. This is a clever book, I'm sure you could revisit it time and again and I probably will revisit it.
I really enjoyed reading this because it was so different from other books. I found myself thinking about it several times in the weeks after I finished it, which is unusual for me. Very worthwhile.

Indeed, at the end of the story we become like the character, Eric Sanderson II, destined to explore and rediscover "The Raw Shark Texts" again and again.
