This is a Vera Stanhope mystery that begins with a murder on a crowded train just before Christmas. By coincidence, Vera’s Joe Ashworth and his daughter are in the same train car. Vera and the team begin investigating the victim’s current life and her history. Secrets abound. Much of the investigation centers on Harbour Street where the victim had lived in a building that is now a guest house for many years. There are neighbors, travelers, the guest house owner and her family. Never fear, Vera will get it sorted with her team. Vera is even learning to be a better manager of her people. This is not a book group book, but it is an example of a British police procedural with an unusual investigator. It is not essential to read these books in order, but there are little things that you might appreciate more if you have.Tags : Harbour Street (Vera Stanhope) [Ann. Harbour Street Vera Stanhope Ann Cleeves 9781447254461 Books Reviews
I love the TV series - the crotchety, but vulnerable and damaged Vera and the atmosphere - so I bought the book (and now "Silent Voices" which I haven't read yet). Of course the book has somewhat of a different flavor than the series, but I still enjoyed it. One thing I enjoyed is that it gives you access to what Vera is thinking, which you are left to guess at from watching the series. I enjoy mysteries set in other countries because they give a refreshing flavor from those written by American authors (Sue Grafton and to a lesser extent, Nevada Barr being exceptions). If you enjoy the series you should like the books as well.
Another fine, atmospheric Vera Stanhope crime thriller by Ann Cleeves. Murder of a saintly older woman in a small English fishing port, which steadily turns into a complete airing of the victim's less than saintly past. Another woman--the town barfly--is killed, and the trail for Inspector Stanhope becomes much more complicated.
As always in this series, the characters and their interactions are the heart of the book, and all of this very finely drawn in "Harbour Street." Cleeves' hallmark red herrings and numerous twists toward the ending are part and parcel of this one also. She fooled me with her sleight of hand here, but she delivers a very satisfying conclusion. Good read.
I love the Vera stories - the characters are interesting, the plots nice and twisty and I love Vera herself - in all her imperfect glory. Cleeves writes with a sly wit and some complexity - this is not an Elizabeth George novel, so it's less of a commitment, but the characterization is rich nonetheless. And there seems to be an underlying optimism in the stories, which I appreciate, but not laid on too thick.
The twist at the end was unexpected. I like the book better than the TV series for this episode. Anne 's descriptions of the town, Mardle and Harbour Street were so vivid that I could picture it so clearly in my head as I was reading the book. After reading all the six Vera series and currently reading the seventh book, I am definitely now a fan. I am hoping she will continue to write the Vera series and not stop.......
I've read all of Ann Cleeves series of Vera Stanhope novels and this is probably my favourite. During the series Vera appears to have mellowed a little although she is mostly still as irascible. Joe's daughter finds the first body and because of this Joe it feels as though he plays a slightly larger role in this mystery. The Harbour Street of the title plays a big part in the mystery and the author portrays both the past and present of the location extremely well.
One is in safe hands with this author. The writing is clear and she knows where she is going with the story at all times. No cheap tricks to create tension and the characters as always are well developed and fully realised. With some authors I feel as if I am seeing through dense fog...the characters just do not take shape on the page. Not so here.....ann cleeves just gets better at what she does. Loved this book....over far too soon.
The Inspector Vera Stanhope series has garnered a lot of well-deserved praise from critics. This entry in the Ann Cleeves series, although with a tendency to meander a bit, is very good. After Joe Ashworth, Vera's favorite among her detectives, and his daughter discover a murdered woman on the Metro, Vera and her team begin an investigation that leads to more murder, secrets in the past, and dangers in the present. As they learn about know the residents in and around Harbour Street, where the murder victim lived, it becomes clear that nearly everyone connected to the case is hiding something. The mystery is intriguing and the murderer not easy to identify. But the best part of any book in this series is the quirky Vera, whose scruffy appearance, age, and solitary personal life, make her a much appreciated standout from the run of the mill female detective. The book can be read without having the others in the series, but it is such a good series that it would be a shame to miss the previous ones.
