Prada and Prejudice Mandy Hubbard Books

This is one of those books that I was so excited to read when it first came out and now a couple years later I'm finally reading it. Like the other books featured in the Flashback Friday, I'm wondering why this took me so long to read. It was fabulous! How could I not love a book that takes place in both modern day and 1800's London England, has a fiesty character, romance and a well written friendship.

I adored the setting, the historical references to Victorian London, and the characters. Callie herself starts off as an insecure girl who's traveled abroad with her school group to London. Wanting to fit in, her buys a pair of prada shoes and ends up tripping and knocking herself out, which sends her back in time. While I loved Callie's sense of self she discovers on her journey, I was really irritated with her during the beginning of her visit back in time. Don't get me wrong, I love a character who's all about women's right, but I couldn't excuse her lack of respect for the time period. I felt like Callie was a well educated character and once she learns she's in 1815 I had expected her to try and act a little more proper than she did or at least try her best to fit in, instead of trying to change the way society was during this time. At the same time, I loved that Callie stayed true to herself. I adored her transformation when she returns to modern day London, and of course I enjoyed the entertaining mishaps that she causes in 1815 London. Ooh that ending was fabulous!

This is a wonderful, Jane Austen like romance that really made this story for me! I loved it! Alex is definitely a swoonworthy "Mr. Darcy". The chemistry he and Callie have is a well written love/hate one. Really, it's not so much hate, but they both do a great job at suppressing their true feelings from each other. This is a fabulously, fun, quick, cute read. If you're a fan of Jane Austen I definitely recommend picking up this clean cut book up! I'm hoping there will be another book to compliment this one.

Prada and Prejudice Mandy Hubbard Books Reviews

This is a light, fun young adult twist on Pride and Prejudice. In it, Callie is a 15-year-old sophomore on a class trip to England during summer vacation. Callie is not enjoying her trip as much as she hoped, as the "A-list" girls are ignoring her and she is left pretty much to herself. A known klutz, Callie falls and bumps her head outside of a Prada shoe store, where she has just purchased a pair of 3-inch heels (hoping to impress the A-listers). When Callie regains her senses, she somehow has been transported to 1815 Regency England. After a fortuitous mistake causes her to be mixed up with an American guest in a duke's home, Callie takes residence and struggles to integrate into 1815 English customs. The restrictions and expectations of women during that time period are particularly hard for Callie to swallow and Callie becomes embroiled in an effort to save a young woman she befriends from an unwanted engagement. During this time, Callie also gets to know the young duke, Alex. At first, Callie thinks he is an arrogant, controlling jerk. Over time, she realizes that first impressions cannot always be trusted, and the duke may be much more than he at first appears to be.

Overall, this is an enjoyable and credible modern twist on the classic. It has creative plot parallels to the original book. In addition, Callie's character development is interesting and relatable. Anyone who likes Jane Austen should like this version of the story, although readers expecting something deep or intellectual will be disappointed.
I just re-read this book and loved it just as I originally did. Callie is in London, England for a school trip and she feels so alone. She was supposed to be there with her best friend but she ended up moving away so she's trapped with the mean popular girls. She decides to go buy some Prada shoes to try to fit in with the popular girls and ends up leaving the store, tripping on the side walk, and wakes up in 1815 England. She's so confused and lost and ends up at the home of the Duke of Harksbury. Emily, his cousin, is at the door and thinks she is her friend Rebecca who is supposed to be travelling to visit from America.

Callie is usually really clumsy and she always feels like a geek. She made a mistake and talked to her best friend on the phone in the bathroom at school and a popular chearleader was there and hasn't allowed her to forget it. Emily is so sweet, upbeat, and thrilled to have Rebecca there. Emily is engaged to be married to a man she doesn't really know and she's been depressed about it. They are staying at Alex the Duke of Harksbury's estate and his mother Victoria lives there as well. He seems very stuffy and he doesn't seem to care about others. He's good looking and young but he has an air of superiority it seems. Callie wants to be a real friend and to help Emily and so she goes about helping her get out of her engagement so she can be with who she really wants to. She soon learns there is so much more to Alex than how he appears. She has immense guilt for pretending to be Rebecca.

Definitely worth reading.
