Corroded Book Three of The St Croix Chronicles eBook Karina Cooper
This is one of the more mysterious series that I read; I am never sure if it will have a happy ending (doubtful), but the protagonist, Cherry, is worth the time. This book is an opium drenched dream and I was never really sure if the perceptions were real or based on foggy imaginations. I accept this drug fueled part of Cherry's life and only wish the last bit of the book hadn't occurred, or at least without better build up. I want to fight for Cherry, for Micah, and for all the Sweets, but it is hard to conceive of a way they will end up ok. Spoiler: the final part of the book featured a last minute battle with some sort of plotted nasty debasement of Cherry for money making?, and an unbelievable coup to retrieve her. Throwing in a sorcery battle didn't bother me, but the ability for pieces to be put into place in such a short, unexpected time frame did. Four stars for the rest of the book though as I did believe in the blurry views of Cherry.Tags : Corroded: Book Three of The St. Croix Chronicles - Kindle edition by Karina Cooper. Corroded Book Three of The St Croix Chronicles eBook Karina Cooper Reviews
A tedious read. Disappointing, the previous two were much more engaging and had better character development. This was repetitive in descriptions.
What a book, Karina Cooper is so talented at writing characters you can relate to!
I have read all of this series so far and love the quirky characters, and the Steam Punk world Ms. Cooper has created. The heroine is neither too good, nor too smart and I really cared about what was happening to her and around her.
A good story
I really liked the rest of this series, but, at the end of this one, my first thought was "what?" and my second "that's it?". It's awfully short, and Cherry mostly walks around in a drugged haze talking to herself about how miserable she is. The active plot moments are pretty confusing, and I'm still not sure what sense to make out of ANY of them. But it's a great world and the characters are interesting (usually), so this is pretty much a "well, that could have been better" review.
I can't lie - I love these books. I find myself always needing the next and the next and the next. I have given books 4 and 5 - five stars even though I don't like doing this unless it's Oliver Twist. But, these have become a must have, must read for me. From the 1st book I took to the characters - their weaknesses, their strengths, and the story development. Maybe it's a personal preference or maybe I like moving through foggy, dark landscapes. I don't question it, I just enjoy the reads.
Cherry St Croix inhabits a bleak space in this novel. Once more tied to the Menagerie and the Veil, and lost in an addiction to opium that dulls the pain of her multiple losses, she struggles to find and kill the man who murdered her husband and to pay off her debts to the Veil by continuing her role as a Collector. To say more the the narrative would be spoiler after spoiler. Cooper writes as beautifully as ever. Dirty, fog ridden London in this parallel reality is beautifully rendered. Plot twists abound and before the book ends Cherry will be as isolated and humiliated more than could have imagined.
Much of the content is adult in nature, even if explicit sexual encounters are limited. If it were a film I'd give it an M rating.
