Three cheers for Victoria Dahl! In a genre that is choc full of so much dross, it's rare to find an author of Victoria Dahl's quality, and she's on my automatic purchase list for that reason. In Flirting with Disaster she is on superb form. Fully realised, complex, feminist characters (and not just the women! No one dimensional alpha morons here). Funny banter, lovingly depicted female friendships, genuine emotion (no dumb insta-love) super hot sex scenes. And sex scenes where the characters always use condoms! Even while specifically mentioning they have an IUD. I think I literally cheered at that point. If I have to read one more book where the characters just profess to one another that they're clean, and jump in bareback - despite knowing each other a matter of weeks, and often with the male character (always, only, the male character) being notoriously promiscuous - I will scream. Thank GOD for Victoria Dahl. Best romance novel I've read in ages. I only wish she was more prolific!
Fast (in every sense) and fun, Flirting with Disaster brings two pretty with-it characters together on equally bad footing. Sure they're hot and the attraction is so very hot, but they both lie their pants off. Isabel is a fresh take on the typical damsel in distress in that through her hardships she found an unrepentant vixen. She's unapologetic about her sexuality. She's bold and often shocking. I liked that a lot. She got a little weepy toward the end, but I was okay with that. She was due a few tears. Tom was more introspective than I was prepared for. He made me feel like I haven't been giving men enough credit all these years. The mystery was a nice energy boost to a romance that started off as anything but. It was also nice to hang out with the ladies from the previous installments and Jill is a fantastic addition to the group. I wish Victoria Dahl had given Tom a man's night out so we could catch up on the men too. I can't wait for more from Dahl. She rocks romance.
I'm a huge Dahl fan, but I had been dubious about her trajectory after her last two novels (SO TOUGH TO TAME and LOOKING FOR TROUBLE). I worried that she was going too deep into hard-core erotica and leaving behind the quirky heroines that I loved so much. This book proved me very wrong and I'm sure glad of it!

FLIRTING WITH DISASTER is truly Isabelle's story. She's an anatomical artist living deep in the mountains outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Her peaceful--but solitary--life is rudely interrupted when an U.S. Marshal, Tom Duncan shows up at her footstep asking her questions about a man lurking in the neighborhood. The visit leaves Isabelle terrified that police had finally found her after years of running from her past. After Isabelle's strange reaction to his visit, Tom grows curious about the eccentric woman who hides away in an isolated mountain cottage. As he takes a closer look at her, he discovers her charming boldness and kooky sense of humor. He also comes periously close to the horrible truth of Isabelle's past.

This book has everything a girl could ask for fascinating characters, exciting plot, and HOT sex. Isabelle isn't your ordinary romance heroine. She's older (37), proud of her body, knows what she wants sexually and otherwise, and strong-willed. Tom's a sweet-hearted cop who wants to fix the wrongs in the world, but some wrongs can't be fixed. They're not instantly attracted to each other, which is a plus in my book. In fact, at first, Tom thinks Isabelle is more than a little kooky, and is afraid of her anatomical paintings. However, they start to appreciate each other, in multiple positions.

I was also impressed at how well Dahl interweaved the subplot(s) into the story. The issue of the judge's stalker works so well with the mystery of Isabelle's past that I was flipping the pages, wanting to know what was next. It's really hard to do romantic suspense well, but Dahl more than succeeds here.

Oh, and did I mention the side story of two lesbians? I love it!
